How to Use Visioning If You’re Not That Visual

Guest post by Emma Gwillim

WHAT you see is what you get. Focus on the image of the thing you most want to create in your life and it will become manifest – so we've been told.

But what if you're just not that visual? It's estimated that around two-thirds of the population have a visual representation system – the brain's preferred way of processing information.

But what if you're in the minority? What do you get when you just can't see it? One quick Google will give you reams of evidence of how effective visualization can be.

Elite sports people have used the trick of 'mental rehearsal' for decades, seeing themselves scoring the goal, hitting the hole in one, getting the last-minute, game-winning touchdown.

'The Secret' popularized using the law of attraction, imagining a goal achieved in vivid imagery, to manifest it into reality. Carefully curated vision boards are championed.

Why is it so effective? By giving your brain a clear picture - a destination if you will - of where you want to get to activates the creative part of your brain that is a solution-finder, keen to obey.

It also makes sure your brain filters the right information to keep you on the fast-track to your goal, weeding out anything irrelevant. It also gives you the motivation and encouragement needed to keep going.

So, now we’re sold on the power of visualization, how can you apply these principles if seeing the end result isn’t coming easily? Here are five tips:

Have faith: Do what you can. While visual imagery may not be your brain’s preferred mode of operation, focus on what you can see. Don’t load pressure on yourself to see the complete picture, just notice what does come up for you.

Take a dive: If you can’t see the full picture of your goal achieved, ask yourself what proof or evidence would you need to know you’ve achieved your goal.

For example, if it’s generating a certain income it might be that a bank statement would be the proof you need. Or, if you’re aiming to be a certain weight, it might be that seeing the dial on the bathroom scales is your evidence.

Dive into a specific scenario in your ideal reality and take a snapshot that you can use as your 'vision' rather than feeling stressed that you can’t see the bigger picture.

Use your senses: To follow the law of attraction principles is to act as if you've already achieved the goal it is you're seeking.

Visualizing aside, use your senses to play out in your imagination what you would be feeling, what you'd hear, what you'd smell, taste, think if you were already living out your dream.

Amplify the sounds and really embrace the feelings that come up as you focus on your goal.

Break it down: Envisioning a big goal may feel a little unnatural for some when it seems a far cry from their current reality.

If you’re a more logical thinker you may want to break down your goal into smaller steps, while keeping the big goal in mind.

What steps would it take to get you where you want to go? Practice focusing on, and visualizing, a smaller milestone on the path to your goal.

Play to your strengths: Focus on what works for you. If you’re a natural writer, write out your goal achieved in the most creative, compelling language you can muster.

If you prefer to listen, record yourself describing your goal achieved and play it back to yourself. Draw up a plan or leave little reminders or affirmations around your home.

Know what works for you and use it to your advantage.

Nap Your Way to Brilliance

By Dr Jill Ammon-Wexler

WHY take an afternoon nap? Good question. Perhaps one answer is a reference to one man known for "nodding off" in the afternoon - Albert Einstein.

Actually more than one great thinker has been known to take brief afternoon power naps.

Einstein - well-known for his daily 'power naps'
So... here's a great way to boost your brain power in the afternoon - take a quickie power nap, then forego coffee and instead grab a chunk of dark chocolate!

Sound like an odd combination? More and more researchers are saying that power naps are just the thing for quickie boosts to one's cognitive edge, memory, creativity, and level of energy.

The Importance of Nap Length

Research indicates that the length of your nap will determine your brain-boosting benefits.

The 20-minute power nap, for example, yields a great boost in mental alertness and motor learning skills required to learn a new skill like playing a musical instrument.

But what if you nap for more than 20 minutes? Research shows that such longer naps tend to help boost your memory and enhance your creativity.

Napping for from 30 to 60 minutes, on the other hand, creates beneficial "slow-wave sleep". Such naps are related to improved decision-making and memorizing skills.

If you nap from 60 to 90 minutes you will almost certainly enter REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

Such longer nap periods are important in making new connections among your neurons (brain cells), and in creating solutions to complex problems.

An interesting study by Matthew P. Walker, an assistant professor of neuroscience at UC Berkeley, found that adults who napped for 90 minutes after lunch significantly increased their learning power.

Naps Versus Coffee

Is taking a power nap better than grabbing a cup of coffee? Yes, since caffeine can actually decrease your memory. You may feel more wired after a cup of coffee, but you're also more prone to making mistakes.

Grab a Piece of Chocolate

Grab a piece of dark chocolate after your nap to sharpen up your mind and boost your cognitive skills.

A study by Professor Ian Macdonald from the University of Nottingham found that consumption of a cocoa drink rich in flavanols - a key ingredient of dark chocolate - can boost the blood flow to key areas of your brain for up to two to three hours.

Increased blood flow to these areas of the brain helps increase performance in specific tasks and boost general alertness over a short period.

The study suggests that the cocoa flavanols found in chocolate could be useful in enhancing brain function for people fighting fatigue, sleep deprivation, and even the effects of ageing.

Flavanols are also present in red wine, green tea and blueberries.

Can't Take a Nap?

Here's an alternative if you just can't find a way to take an afternoon nap at work - listen to a 10-minute "Power Nap" brain entrainment audio you've stored on your pad or mobile phone!

The Bottleneck of Your Success

By Darren Hardy of 'Success' magazine

I want to zero in on something because I have found it to be true, having studied lots of organizations…

Those that have gone on to dent or shape the universe, and those who could have, should have, but didn’t…

THIS is one of the biggest reasons why:
Darren Hardy of Success magazine

Wait…

Before I tell you…

What do YOU think is the main bottleneck to your organization’s greater success?

The answers I hear most often are…

* The economic climate
* Competitive threats
* Technology issues
* Hiring great people
* Gas prices
* Supply chain issues

Nope.

While all those might be considerations, the main constraint to the future growth of your organizations is…

drumroll…

drumroll…

drumroll…

YOU.

YOU are your organization’s greatest bottleneck. Period.

I remember interviewing the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar home-building company in Mexico.

At the time his company was building 200 homes a day, he had 16,500 employees and 6,000 vendors, and had been averaging a 2,000 per cent growth rate for the last seven years. This is how he put it:

“The only constraint of the company’s growth and potential is the owner’s ambition. I am the constraint. The market opportunity is there.

"It’s up to me to set the pace, clear obstacles, get resources and create the conversations to grow the company faster.”

Even with 16,500 employees out there, as the leader he knew his company’s main constraint for greater growth was him. As it is for you.

Another great example is when I spent time with (preacher, televangelist and author) Joel Osteen and asked him the key to his successful leadership of such a large, fast-growing and thriving organization.

He explained that when he first took over from his father, he made a great mistake. He was involved with everything. He was doing weddings, baptisms and funerals.

He was adjusting the lights that shined on the stage, editing the brochures and approving the bumpers that are shown on either side of his TV broadcast.

What he discovered is his entire organization stagnated. It could only grow as much as could fit on Joel’s calendar.

He was taxed and stressed out - his entire organization was taxed and stressed, as well as stagnant.

YOU are your organization’s greatest bottleneck. Period.

That’s when Joel realized that he was the bottleneck. He was his organization’s main constraint.

That’s when he removed himself from all those tasks and responsibilities and only focused on the ONE thing that he contributes to the organization that has the greatest impact on its overall success.

For Joel that was the 22-minute sermon he delivers on Sunday morning that is (now) beamed to 40-plus million people. If that sermon is great, it fuels the entire enterprise.

So the lesson here to realize is this:

1) YOU are your organization’s main constraint.

This is the case 100 per cent of the time, no matter your type of organization. If you are the leader, you are and will always be the main bottleneck, until you…

2) Find your ONE THING.

What is the most important function you deliver for the organization? It’s like you are the “rain maker.” My guess is whatever you do to make it “rain” is your ONE most valuable contribution to the organization is.

Focus more of your time, attention, heart and soul, without distraction, on that ONE thing. You do that by…

3) Removing yourself from the neck of the bottle.

Meaning, YOU are the logjam. Clear yourself out. Get out of being involved with most things you are involved with.

Hire great people and let them do their thing… so you can do YOUR thing… your ONE thing… your rain dance.

4) Then do a little leadership as well.

Do as the home-builder CEO said. First of all, increase your ambition and “set the pace, clear obstacles, get resources and create the conversations to grow the company faster.”

So let me simplify your 4-point action plan:

1) Look in the mirror to find your weakest link.

2) Figure out and write down what YOUR one thing is.

3) Stop doing 90 per cent of whatever else you are doing.

4) Make sure your people have the grand vision and have the clear path, resources and knowledge needed to do all that stuff you are no longer going to do or be involved with.

Now, go make it rain!

Simon Sinek: Why good leaders make you feel safe

Posted by John Lee of YourBestYouEver.net

OF the many and diverse qualities we associate with good leaders, 'safety' would probably not appear on too many lists.

Simon Sinek speaking at TED last month
'Courage, decisiveness and a willingness to take risks' would undoubtedly be there.

So would, 'Vision, innovation and a cool head'.

But 'making us feel safe'? No.

Well, according to  best-selling author and management theorist, Simon Sinek, it's right up there.

And in the video below he explains exactly why.

Recorded at TED last month, Simon's presentation is probably one of the most enlightening and thought-provoking you'll have ever seen.

Among the areas he covers are:

* The difference between leadership in the military and corporate worlds... most of the time

* Why creating the right team/ working environment is absolutely crucial

* The importance of 'trust' and 'co-operation', and why they can't simply be commanded

* Why parenthood and great leadership have much in common

And

* The ONE response given to him by ALL the great leaders that he met during his research.

How To Control Your Negative Thought Patterns

Guest post by Margo Kirtikar, PhD

MANY random thoughts race through our brains every single moment of the day. Some of these thoughts make sense but most make no sense at all.

Control your negative thoughts
A few are perhaps practical thoughts about what we should be doing now, tomorrow or next week, reminding ourselves of this or that. And that's perfectly OK because it's reasonable and helpful to us.

A few thoughts are reflections perhaps about what we did and what we could have done better, or contemplations and reflections about some word or sentence we heard or picked up somewhere - maybe it was a movie we saw.

This is good for us because it expands our mind and horizon, opening up new avenues of creative thoughts and ideas.

But here lies the danger - most of our thoughts are plain stupid, useless and senseless, negative and, therefore, they are self-destructive and self-sabotaging thoughts.

It is these negative thoughts that keep us enslaved in a world of negativity, blocking our way from moving freely forward to a happier space of being.

Some lucky people have actually managed to cross over this invisible barrier to stop being slaves to their thoughts and have managed to gain control over their negative thinking patterns enough to eliminate them.

They have managed to escape from the prison of negative thinking and its misery. How is that possible you may ask? How did they manage to do that? I can't do that, or can I really stop my negative thoughts?

The answer is. 'Yes, you can!' Believe it or not yes you can! There's a little technique involved and some work to do in the process of course.

But first you need to recognize the fact that you are a slave to your negative inner thoughts. You need to have the genuine desire to put an end to your life of negativity.

Make the decision, invest some time, willpower and effort, and be persistent until you have succeeded.

Keep on trying again and again, and before you know it your life will be taking a different course to a path of fun, laughter and abundance in every way that you can imagine.

Here are a few hints to help you on your way. The rest is up to you.

* Stop feeling irritated about anything or anyone. Stop complaining about anything and everything. Nothing is more boring than people who constantly complain.

Nothing is more boring than to be with people who find fault with every situation and with everybody. From now on you accept people as they are and you take things in your stride whether you like or not.

Remember you might be doing things to irritate or upset other people too. Would you like it if they were mean or rude to you? No you wouldn't you would be hurt.

So try to keep that in mind. The world does not evolve around you. Instead, try to fit in and to contribute good vibes wherever you go. You're here to make the world a better place whenever and wherever you can.

* Stop surrounding yourself with negative people who know nothing else but to complain about everything. If you can't remove them from your life and you are forced to spend time with them, then try this approach.

Every time they open their mouth, smile and say something positive. For example, how marvelous the weather is, how much you enjoyed a movie you saw, how lovely the flowers are

What a good time you had with your family, or partner, how much you enjoyed the program on TV the night before, or a walk in the forest.

Anything, no matter, talk about the wonderful, the marvelous, enjoying, fun stuff and laugh... do not allow yourself to be sucked into their negative drama.

These people are polluting the air with their negative energy. Interrupt them. Ignore what they say. You'll be helping them by not listening to them.

* Surround yourself with positive happy people who love life and who love themselves. They tend to appreciate the fact that they are alive.

They are the ones who spread good energy around them and you want some of that good energy so you can spread it around yourself.

* Do not watch the news or read about the daily catastrophes in the world. Of course you can read the headlines, take note of that to keep up with the general news of the day.

But you don't need to read or know about or listen to the bad details. You can find plenty of news on line about happy happenings all over the world.

A lot of that is going on that mainstream media do not show you. Ignore all the ones who bring bad tidings.

Follow the ones who bring you good news of good people, creative people, people who contribute to the welfare of the human family.

* Make a habit to watch yourself. Analyze yourself, pay attention, be conscious of what you are thinking about mostly, of your words and what you speak about. Be conscious of your actions and behavior.

This will bring home to you clearly what you are all about and if you see negativity in yourself then you know you have to change that and you know what to do.

* Whatever you find out about yourself accept it. Accept yourself as you are negative or positive or both, and love yourself anyway.

Once you have accepted yourself as you are and you like yourself as you are - the good and the bad - you are ready for the change that you wish to see in yourself.

* The thing is, you need to become aware of who you are and what you are, to take notice and to pay attention to yourself.

You need to love yourself, to have self-confidence. You need to like yourself and who you are. Only then are you able to like and appreciate others.

* Fill your mind - from the moment you wake up in the morning until the last moment before you fall asleep - with positive thoughts and affirmations.

Feel these emotionally, feel that you are loved with passion, feel the passion in everything you do. Feel and feel and feel again, that you are alive.

It's a privilege so enjoy being alive and be grateful that you can experience life.

Let me explain why affirmations are important and necessary to help you cultivate the energy of being positive.

In life there is no vacuum you see - a glass half full with water has the other half that's supposedly empty filled with air! If you want the air to disappear you fill the glass with more water right to the top.

Imagine the same principle in your brain/mind. It's either full of rubbish or with good stuff. Surround yourself with rubbish, the input is rubbish, the output is rubbish! Cruel but true!

That's exactly how it is. So in order to push the negative thoughts out, fill your brain, cram your brain with positive input/affirmations - so full that it leaves no room for the negative.

I'll list some affirmations for you at the end of this article but you can also make up your own, as long as it's positive input.

And just so you understand me correctly, the positive input can come from any good source, good intelligent positive friends, acquaintances, movies, books, TV programs, music, nature, all outside of yourself.

You do this until you soak in so much of the good and the positive that you, your inner self, will change inwardly to be genuinely a positive and happy person, happy with yourself and happy with the world.

That's called inner peace.

Too many people walk around laughing and pretending to be happy, who are positive on the outside, tell jokes and so forth.

But it's fake because on the inside they are plagued with negativity through their inner thoughts and feelings of hate, resentment, jealousy and low self-esteem.

Needless to say this is a perfect prescription for serious illness and disease to follow.

You want to not only push the negative thoughts away but to really clear your whole system, your heart, your emotional body and your aura - everything about you inside and out needs to be positive.

In other words, full of light that leaves no room for darkness at all.

Here are the affirmations you could repeat to yourself. Remember you can also make up your own according to your own needs.

You repeat one or more the whole time quietly in your mind. Any time you catch a negative, useless thought, affirm again and again.

Affirmations:

I am a happy person

I am full of light

I like myself

I love myself

I love life

I love everyone and everyone loves me

I am content

I am at ease with myself and with others

I enjoy my life

I surround myself with white light

I am genuinely friendly and kind

I am a compassionate person

I feel good about myself and my life

Everything is as it should be

I live in the present moment

I am free of all bad karma

I am the creator of my life

I am responsible for my moods, my thoughts and my feelings.

I wish to be happy

I choose to be a happy person

Note: To be also practical remember that we all have bad days or moments when something happens that really upsets us.

Of course, we can't and we shouldn't deny that. The way to go is to accept that as it is, but don't let it take you over.

Analyze the situation, reflect on it, accept it and either change it if you can, or move on. What I'm saying is use your common sense. Be kind to yourself.

Getting In The Zone

By Darren Hardy of 'Success' Magazine

GREAT athletes put the odds in their favor by having a routine that helps them start each day right.

Most top athletes go through a preparation routine before every game, which starts long before they get on the field. The best ones usually start the moment they awake.

Darren Hardy of 'Success' Magazine
I have found that the way you start something sets the tone, pace and rhythm for how you will sustain and finish something. This is true for your day as well.

How you START the day will very much dictate how the rest of your day will go. It will set the tone, pace and momentum of your performance for the day.

How you START the day will very much
dictate how the rest of your day will go.

So if we are going to rebuild your life and lifestyle around one of health, vitality and high-performance, we need to start at the beginning - how you start your day. In this post, I am going to share the three tips to do just that.

I read an article by CEO of Hunt Big Sales and someone you will hear me interview on a future issue of the SUCCESS Magazine CD, Tom Searcy.  The article discusses how most top athletes follow the pattern of a preparation routine with a fierce devotion because it activates all sorts of subconscious and autonomic systems that put that athlete “IN THE ZONE.”

“In the zone” describes a condition of readiness and awareness that helps prepare that person for success.

If you eliminate the quirky, (Tiger Woods makes his hotel bed for instance), the obsessive, (Michael Phelps’ ritualistic warm-ups), and the bizarre, (Rocky Balboa’s dozen raw eggs for breakfast), and you just look at patterns, putting yourself in the zone to have a great day is a solid idea.

As a business owner and leader, you set the pace for the rest of your organization. Your company, even if it has just a few employees, is a reflection of you. Sharpen your company by first sharpening yourself at the dawn of each day.

Let me summarize the key points on Searcy’s 3 Ways to Start Every Day Better so that we can get your body, mind and spirit into “the zone” first thing in the morning.

1. BODY

Coming out of bed, your body needs three things for certain - water, protein and movement. Your systems were all working through the night and need to complete their cycles. Starting with 16 ounces of water gets you started on the eight glasses you already know you need to get anyway and begins the benefits that moving fluids through your body starts.

You need protein in your first food of the day, even if you are going for a run or a workout. A protein shake will do. The rest of the food pyramid is open, but even if you are a very light breakfast eater, protein is important.

Movement gets the blood moving, clears the mind and releases energy. Workouts with weights or cardio are great - but sometimes ten minutes of stretching is all you have time or space for. Regardless, don’t let the first 30 minutes of the day get started without moving.

2. MIND

Your mind needs focus or you will waste time and energy in your morning and in your day. The most effective business owners and CEOs that I know actually focus on very few things. Those that receive their focus, receive all of their focus.

A billionaire I interviewed told me one of his keys to success - he tries to accomplish only one thing per day. A very big thing, of course, but from the moment he woke up until he finished his day, he threw every available effort at that one thing. Most of us measure our days in volume, not in scale.

How many checks on our list, not how important one big check might be. Pick the one BIG thing to accomplish and let your morning open up with that as the focus for your first thoughts.

3. SPIRIT

Part of putting yourself in the zone is achieving alignment of your core energy and your positive emotions. A proven way to do this is through a simple reflection of gratitude. Being grateful, aware of all you have, is a centering action. It starts your day with energy and calm.

When you greet your employees, clients, and suppliers throughout the day knowing that you included them in your reflections, they will feel that in your interaction and it will make for a better exchange regardless of the circumstances.

So remember, if you want to be a top performer in your field, put the odds in your favor by putting yourself in the zone.

Feel Good in 10 Minutes: Try This Exercise

By Tina Ann Hisick

WORDS have a special power. Whether they are written or they are spoken, there is a certain magic behind what they can do. Well, it's not really magic, but it can seem like it when we put their power to the test. We can even change the way we feel and lift our moods, all with a power that comes from within.

Lift your mood - feel good!
We all have our days where we're just not feeling well, or maybe we're downright in a bad mood. There's nothing wrong with that. We're human beings, and humans are going to have their challenges all the time. But when it can become wrong, is if we decide to stay in that mood, or remain in that feeling in our heads.

Good thing is we don't have to. We have the power of words.

Words are powerful because they come from our thoughts. Our thoughts are actually things made up of vibrational frequencies, just like electricity from a tower. Though we can't see the frequencies with our eyes, doesn't mean they aren't there. Your lights turn on when you flip the switch, don't they? They are able to do that through their power.

With every thought we think, we're using our words, and emitting those frequencies with them. There are two different kinds of frequencies that exist; positive and negative. The words we use will determine what kind of energy we feel within, and what kind of energy we're putting out. This short exercise can bring more positivity to you, to those around you and within.

Exercise: Give yourself 10 minutes, and pull out a paper and pen. Sit down and start writing as many positive words as you can think of. These are words that make you feel good when you see, hear or say them. For me, words like "lovely", "sunny" and "bright" rang a bell.

Start listing them one after one and give the 10 minutes all the brainstorming you've got. See how many positive words you can come up with in that time. Can you beat me? I wrote 56 words. If you wrote more, good for you.

After your time is up, go back over your list and say each word out loud. Do this as many times as you'd like and notice what happens. You may start to feel a little better. Maybe you'll perk up. You might start to feel really, really good. May all that's positive come to you!

So the next time you're feeling blue, or maybe because you want to, try this exercise and use the power of words to lift your mood. There are so many good ones to choose from, and they have so much to offer you.

Thank you for your readership. You can read more articles by Tina Ann Hisick at tinahisick.blogspot.com.

Conquer Your Fears To Achieve Your Goals

Guest post by Lolly Daskal

TWO boys dove into a lake one day, challenging each other to swim across, a distance of about two miles.

Pic courtesy of rapidlikes.com
They swam with a strong and steady stroke, and the lead swimmer, not looking back, continued swimming on toward the other shore.

When he emerged on the shore after completing his swim, he looked back to see that his friend was nowhere near.

When they met back up, he asked, “How was it that you did not follow me across?”

The boy who turned back said, “Oh, after I got about halfway out, I looked back and saw how far I had come, and I was afraid I could not make it, so I turned back.”

“But,” said the boy who swam across couldn’t you see that it was just as hard to turn back to safety as it was to continue swimming to your goal?”

One of the biggest obstacles to reaching our goals is fear.

'Fear is an emotion that overrides our intelligence'
It stops us from moving toward our goals, and it plays havoc with our quality of life.

People often fail to recognize the impact of fear - sometimes because we don’t even use the word. Instead we talk about things like worry, nervousness, stress, shyness, or anxiety.

But the only way to diminish fear is to conquer it.

Develop self-confidence: Self-confidence is not absence of fear but the mastery of fear. The key is to know it is a state of mind you can create anytime you want, no matter what the circumstances.

Master motivation: Motivation is a vital component of reaching any goal. Since most goals tend to involve pushing through short-term pain to achieve a long-term gain, staying connected to your motivation keeps you on the path to success.

Goals themselves are highly motivating, but to get even greater leverage you need to keep that motivation up front in your mind.

Proceed past procrastination: When you procrastinate, you’re waiting for the right time, the right place, the right person - external things you can never count on.

When you find yourself becoming paralyzed by inaction, learn to power through. Start with small tasks to build momentum and move past the obstacle of procrastination.

Build self-discipline: To achieve a goal, you must be willing to do what you know you should do when you should do it, whether you like or not.

Underlining all great achievements is the quality of self-discipline. It is the ability to delay short-term gratification to enjoy even greater rewards in the long term.

Carry out commitment: One of the fastest ways to move past fear is to commit to what you are doing.

When you commit, you’re putting your integrity on the line, making yourself accountable to do what you say you will do. If you need help, enlist support to keep yourself accountable.

'Conquer your fears and achieve your goals'
When you realize that you have come just so far and then you find yourself tempted to turn back instead of moving forward because of worry, anxiety, or fear.... conquer your fear and enhance your motivation and self-discipline, block procrastination, and carry out your commitment.

Lead From Within: Self-awareness can be life-changing, and doing what you need to do to reach your goals is transforms leadership. Keep swimming in the direction of achievement.
