Yet that really doesn't need to be the case, according to health psychologist and Stanford lecturer, Kelly McGonigal.
Kelly has actually changed her view completely, to the point that she believes we can now make stress our friend.
And earlier this year, she explained all with a lively and very entertaining presentation at TED.
During the talk, she told of the startling findings from a survey carried out by Harvard University.
She covered the physical responses to stress - including the role played by the 'cuddle hormone', oxytocin.
And she revealed the incredible results achieved when subjects were trained to simply rethink their view of stress.
